What is Hypnobirthing?

So, what is hypnobirthing? It’s not as weird as it sounds!

Women all over the world often feel anxious or fearful about birth thanks to other’s scary stories or personal negative experiences. This activates our fight or flight mode (sympathetic nervous system), which slows labour down, makes the whole experience more painful and can lead to unnecessary intervention! There are no sabre toothed tigers in the birthing room that you need to fight or run away from… so fight or flight mode is completely unhelpful!

Hypnobirthing is a combination of breathing and visualisation techniques helping you remain calm and confident in pregnancy & during labour. This helps you to rest and progress (activating your parasympathetic nervous system) – far more helpful!

We’ve all experienced blushing when someone says something embarrassing – this is a physical response to words. Hypnobirthing teaches you to respond physically to words – not to make you blush but rather to make you relax and experience a far more positive pregnancy & birth. It’s relevant if you’re planning a Caesarean section, a water birth, or you have no plans at all!

Hypnobirthing is also really helpful for birth partners. Partly so they can understand the techniques and join in with mum-to-be. Hypnobirthing techniques can easily be adapted to other stressful life situations… it’s a win-win!
